José Joaquín Trejos Fernández (San José, 18 de marzo de 1916 - San José, 10 de febrero de 2010). Político costarricense, Presidente de la República de 1966 a 1970. Sus padres fueron Juan Trejos Quirós y Emilia Fernández Aguilar. Casó el 30 de agosto de 1936 con Clara Fonseca Guardia. De este matrimonio nacieron cinco hijos: Diego, Juan José, Humberto, Alonso y Álvaro Trejos Fonseca.
Cursó estudios de economía en la Universidad de Chicago. Durante muchos años fue profesor de Ciencias Económicas en la Universidad de Costa Rica.
Sin antecedentes políticos, para los comicios presidenciales de 1966 fue elegido como candidato por una alianza de partidos denominada Unificación Nacional y obtuvo una victoria muy ajustada sobre el ex Canciller Daniel Oduber Quirós. Durante su gobierno se construyó la llamada carretera rústica a Limón, se creó el Banco Popular, se emitió la Ley de Desarrollo Comunal y se aprobaron algunas reformas constitucionales de importancia.
Después de su gobierno se mantuvo activo en política, colaborando con las actividades de las agrupaciones social cristianas. Ha publicado Ocho años en la política costarricense y una autobiografía denominada Por esfuerzo propio.

Hoy nos deja una persona singular de nuestra historia costarricense quién impulsara el desarrollo del país con la creación de la Compañía de Fuerza y Luz, la Escuela Centroamericana de Ganadería. la primera Ley Forestal, el Banco Popular y de Desarrollo Comunal entre otras grandes obras.
El paso por esta tierra es temporal y a todos nos llegara la hora de ser llamados a dejarla, al final quedan las memorias, el cariño y las buenas acciones que llevamos a cabo con el tiempo que nos fue prestado.
